ABSTRACT

Many specialist teachers for the visually impaired have an advisory role working with headteachers, teachers and professionals from other disciplines. The skills relevant to this work are varied and the term that encompasses them is ‘consultancy skills’. Specialist teachers can be described as ‘consultants’ who are trying to bring about change in order to ensure success for pupils with a visual impairment. This change can be at classroom, school or local authority level. This chapter covers the skills required to be a successful agent of change and examines some of the factors to be considered in this complicated process.
