ABSTRACT

The role of the advisory teacher for children and young people with visual impairments has changed and developed significantly in the past 20 years. This chapter provides the reader with an overview of the advisory teacher’s role in supporting the child or young person with a visual impairment. This support extends to the parents and family and also to the staff of the schools and colleges which these children and young people attend. The types of support which can be offered are discussed and the need to work in close cooperation with other professionals is emphasised.
