ABSTRACT
Two great European alliances — the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria Hungary and Italy, and the Dual Alliance of France and Russia — were already in being by the mid-1890s. Both were essentially defensive in character, designed to protect their members against a possible attack from outside, not to commit them to support each other's aggression.
