ABSTRACT
In the previous chapter, consideration was given to the imperial expansion of European Powers, particularly in the late 1870s and the early 1880s. While this certainly encouraged rivalries, these were spread over a very wide area, and were less intense than the rivalries of the preceding period, which had been concentrated on Europe itself.
