ABSTRACT

What industrial heritage is, and what we think we are doing when we interpret industrial heritage depends on who we are and where we live. I shall define industry in its old sense of productive activity. It can be primary (extractive) such as mining, quarrying, fishing, farming or forestry; secondary (transformational) such as metal-working, carpentry, milling, spinning or weaving; or tertiary (service) such as transport, catering, banking or security. Of these only transport (limited to boats), and security (limited to state security forces) are dealt with elsewhere in this volume.
