An attempt like that made in parts of this book to bring about a reconciling encounter between Marxist and Christian ideas at the theoretical level may well seem to many hopelessly quixotic, and has consequently rarely been made; I can think only of John Macmurray's in The Clue to History and Creative Society. But there have been many alliances at the level of practice, since there have been many circumstances in which Christians and Marxists have resisted oppression together; and this has been reflected in theology: Tillich, Hromadka, Gutierrez. It might therefore be thought that the practical alliance is the easiest way in to the reconciling project.
