ABSTRACT

The coup plot of 31 December had a number of important effects on the political life of Lebanon. Many of these were the opposite of what the conspirators had intended. The effects of the plot were felt especially in military politics and, for some time, produced rumours about the possibility of replacing civilian by military cabinet ministers, and establishing military rule in the face of the troubled conditions. 1 The plot was also felt in other areas of Lebanese political life, including foreign policy, the economy, and public life.
