ABSTRACT

This chapter, written in a critical postmodern style, discusses and presents the script of a play entitled “Grotesque humor regeneration of McDonaldization and McDonaldland.” The fi rst act of the play introduces the story of Nan, a worker in a Happy Meal toy factory in China, who is pregnant as a result of an illicit affair with her direct supervisor. In the second act, the action moves between three zones of the main stage: stage left is a meeting of McDonald’s board of directors; stage right, the Chinese factory; stage center is McDonald’s Redlands restaurant. In the third and fi nal act spectators are asked to select an ending informed by one of three literary theories: Brechtian tragic grotesque, Boalian resituated grotesque, or Bakhtinian carnivalesque.
