ABSTRACT

Early in 1960, Tim Asch took a risky initiative when he decided to befriend Peter Loizos, then a student at Harvard University. Tim was working then at the Film Study Centre, at the Peabody Museum, Harvard, logging the Ju/’hoansi footage shot by John Marshall, and getting to know it. Later he was to become involved in editing some of it with Marshall. Robert Gardner was then Director of the Center, having helped Marshall complete The Hunters, and himself preparing for a major project in Melanesia. Tim labored in a cutting room next to Gardner’s office.
