ABSTRACT
T he dynamics of every interview are different. They may be short or long, ina pub, an airport lounge or a sauna. Rex Reed once interviewed singer BetteMidler while she was sitting on a toilet in a gay bathhouse (Silvester 1994: 30). They may be friendly or (occasionally) confrontational. They may be about someone’s sex life or about high matters of state. Many interviews are unpredictable. Sometimes an interview can change your life. This happened to Fenner Brockway (1986), the late Labour peer, peace activist and journalist, who was ‘converted’ to socialism following his interview with Keir Hardie.
