ABSTRACT

The novelty of changes in bodily functioning sooner or later wears off. Eventually, the person with ulcerative colitis has to settle into a routine with his or her illness and its symptoms. These become facts of life which have to be coped with. Relationships with other people may change as the sufferer alters their daily routine or withdraws from particular social situations. Family life may be affected, as the person with the illness begins to spend an increasing amount of time in the toilet or becomes excessively concerned about his or her diet. Work or school may be disrupted as the individual is forced to take sick leave.
