ABSTRACT
In this chapter I discuss, in a tentative and partly speculative fashion, a perspective on science which should be found appealing by institutionalist economists. The simple idea is to view science as a social institution. I will discuss a few rudimentary theoretical accounts of science as an irreducibly social or institutional entity and point out some possible implications of this insight for understanding the fate of institutionalist thought in economics.
