ABSTRACT

The concepts of generative rules and of local grammars, which are subsets of a universal grammar, are tools that have been applied to a wide range of musical analyses. The specific application of the principles of generative grammar to music has been described by Sloboda (1985) and an informative overview of alternative grammars has been provided by West, Howell and Cross (1985). The versatility of generative models in

application to musical composition has been discussed by Jones (1989) in the context of computer orientated music.
