One of Vygotsky’s key concepts was that of the ‘zone of proximal development’ (Vygotsky 1978). This describes the gap between what the child can do alone and what they can do with someone who has more knowledge or skill. Gipps further explains that,

This suggests a key role for the teacher is to build a rich learning community in the classroom. The classroom is also part of the wider community of the school and the district. It must, however, be remembered that influences beyond the school, both locally and nationally, affect the focus of curriculum delivery and its assessment.
