ABSTRACT

The physical risks while learning may not be too difficult to control, by providing low-risk learning situations. Learner swimming pools are sometimes provided that are shallow enough for beginners to lie horizontally in a swimming position, off the bottom, but able to support themselves by putting their hands down. In this position they are in their frontier zone while their hands are off the bottom, but can easily regain full control by putting their hands down on the bottom again. A similar approach, for use in deeper water, teaches learners first of all how to regain a feet-on-bottom position from horizontal. In both of these, the principle is the same, and it is a general one: to give learners the confidence that they can regain their established domain whenever they want. This way, they feel much safer while in their frontier zones.
