ABSTRACT

In this chapter I begin with a brief discussion of some of the defining features of the terms, modernity and modernism. I then go on to examine some of Friedrich Nietzsche’s key critiques of modernity, before assessing his influence on the thinking of leading poststructuralists, Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. Next I consider the meanings of postmodernity and postmodernism, focusing on the work of Jean-Francois Lyotard and Jean Baudrillard. This includes an assessment of their indebtedness to Nietzsche.
