The New Imperialism: Postmodern, transmodern and Marxist perspectives
In this chapter, I begin by examining and critiquing a postmodern interpretation of the ‘New Imperialism’, before examining what I perceive to reflect more accurately the US reality, and epitomised by the Project for the New American Century. I then address globalisation and the US Empire. I go on to analyse US imperialism from transmodern and Marxist perspectives, respectively. This includes a discussion of the transmodern concept of enfraudening (developed by educational theorist David Geoffrey Smith in an important critique of current US practice) and of the Marxist concept of racialisation. I conclude by arguing that a critical consideration of imperialisms, old and new, should be central to the curriculum.
