ABSTRACT

One of the most traditional models of masculinity that is presented to growing boys is Action Man. Either dressed as a footballer, cricketer, olympic athlete or as an underwater explorer, a treasure hunter, a space explorer or a soldier in combat gear, Action Man strides through the outer world as if he owns it. He looks continuously outward to the world of public adventure and glory. Indeed, Action Man is so caught up in the act of looking outwards, gaining power and doing things to others, that he never has any time to look downwards and inwards. Never looking closely at himself: his own life-feelings, relationships, bodily experience-is muffled in secrecy.
