I shall take it as uncontroversial that instrumentalists hold the following five theses: (1) that reason can influence action; (2) that it is not, however, sufficient for action since it requires the help of desire; (3) that it is necessary for action; (4) that reason’s role differs from desire’s in providing information relevant to our having, and satisfying, the desires, which provide our ends; and (5) that this role is nevertheless, like desire’s, causal.
