ABSTRACT

This contribution is about facts and norms. More precisely, it is about how normative conclusions are drawn from empirical evidence, and how the normative outlook of a scientist determines which empirical evidence to look for and accept. The investigation of some hot items in primatology shows (1) that facts about apes are meant by some scientists to be relevant to norms of and among people, and (2) that the normative engagement of the scientist determines which facts about apes he or she looks for and accepts.
