ABSTRACT

This concluding chapter once again moves us away from purely Anglo-centric concerns by turning attention to two of our European neighbours’ drug policies. The rationale for this lies in the fact that internationally, just as in domestic policy, there is a recognition that it is impossible to ‘go it alone’ in dealing with illicit drugs, thus creating a need for international joint working to address the problems caused by an international industry. For example, Chapter 5 stated that 90 per cent of the ecstasy that is consumed in the UK originates in the Netherlands. If this situation is occurring as a direct result of the drug policy of the Netherlands then it is clear that Britain has some interest in the manner in which the Dutch ‘police’ their own drug problem.
