ABSTRACT

In sheer numbers of applications this field is at least as well known as any other because it is well organized and publicized. Multimedia systems are used in many museums and art galleries and pictures are the most important component in many of them. A system has been established at the Dallas Museum of Art which includes eight networked digital imaging computer workstations. A number of ‘history information stations’ for the use of visitors have been installed at this museum. Each consists of a microcomputer, 19 monitor with touch screen, disk drive, videodisk player, and stereo amplifier and loudspeakers. The Globe project is one of a number of museum systems described in the Proceedings of the 1991 Pittsburgh conference. However, arguably the most interesting idea discussed in the Proceedings is the visual thesaurus. Consortium members include the National Museum of Science and Industry, the National Maritime Museum, National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside, and the Imperial War Museum.
