Home and consumer applications

A recent article entitled ‘Saturday night at the home cinema’ implied that readers would have sufficient disposable income to be interested in grandiose hi-fi, perhaps motivated by the ‘keeping up with the Joneses syndrome’. The article stresses the importance of Nicam (Near Instantaneous Companded Audio Multiplex) for TV sound, and ‘An AV amp-a big bruiser of a machine with a rear panel which would shame a vintage telephone exchange made by the usual suspects’—together with numerous strategically positioned loudspeakers. Unfortunately, even a technically excellent home cinema is no substitute for the social pleasure of going out to the movies.
