Multimedia applications: prospects and growth
The major markets in 1994 (in current millions of dollars) would be Consumer 4337, Heavy manufacturing 2211, Other 2103, Government 2055, Motion pictures 1239, Education and libraries 850, Computer and information Services 450, and Retail trades 352. Total $13.6 billion. Major manufacturers now consider it worthwhile to market ‘multimedia systems’. These are really powerful microcomputers with extensions, integrated to be more easily managed than a micro plus some add-ons. This idea occurred to Commodore/Amiga back in August 1990 when they launched their ‘CDTV’ in the UK at around £700. Unfortunately it was a market failure.
