ABSTRACT

Science has proved to be a two-edged sword bestowing good and bad gifts. In the twentieth century it created weapons of inconceivable destructive power but advanced the understanding of the immensity of the universe with its millions of galaxies governed by mathematical laws. It promises to be able to alter the human genetic make-up, relieve diseases, and inform us about the brain and its relation to mind. For many, science has become the new saviour of mankind and presents problems for religion in at least three areas: is the world the result of an accident or designed; are we simply material beings without spiritual aspirations; and if there is a Creator how does He act in the world? In the last chapter we saw that Darwin’s work challenged the concept of a designed universe but perhaps physics today can provide some evidence for it. We begin by trying to understand how it all began.
