ABSTRACT

In this chapter we continue the theme of what we are by considering mind and brain. The materialist argues that we are nothing but a collection of interconnected brain cells that opposes the concept of soul and mind, which philosophers such as Descartes (1596-1650) understood as two substances, with mind dominating the body. Today the materialist view has many followers, contending that it is more reasonable to think of one material entity, and conscious events are complex arrangements of low-level particles. But without the organization of such arrangements thought would not occur.
