ABSTRACT

Every religion recognizes that there is something wrong with human nature and offers salvation. In general in the Semitic religions, humanity needs to be delivered from disobedience to God but in the Indian it is usually ignorance which is the problem. How the liberation is envisaged differs, with some religions stressing that God delivers but others believing that mankind must help itself. The goal of liberation is for betterment of life here and an ultimate paradise or nirvana elsewhere. We consider in detail the problem and the remedy in the various religions.
