ABSTRACT

Much has been said about the use of the Internet in special needs education. However, questions arise as to the penetration of Internet use in this field outside a small number of schools and innovators and the actions that might be taken to support more widespread Internet use. This chapter sets information and communication technology (ICT) and the Internet in the context of special needs education policy and practice internationally, indicates the Irish situation via case studies and statistics, outlines major barriers to Internet use in special needs and finally suggests factors to be considered and action to be taken to spread Internet use beyond the bounds of the minority to the majority.
