ABSTRACT
Is China experiencing a meltdown? Riding on an admirable 7 per cent GDP growth rate in the middle of 1998 amidst the negative numbers generated by neighbouring economies, China hardly seems so. However, a deeper look at the structural forces at work in the economy reveals considerable resemblance to the East Asian roller-coaster ride from ‘miracle’ to meltdown.
