ABSTRACT
Early in the second half of the fourteenth century, just as the Renaissance was dawning in Italy, the great Italian humanist Petrarch wrote The Lives of Illustrious Men. A collection of biographies of 30 famous ancient Romans, the book began with the life of Romulus, founder of Rome, and ended with the life of Julius Caesar, the de facto founder of the Roman Empire.
