Defining and defending the Chinese state: geopolitical perspectives

Do aspects of the geography of China make defending its territory particularly difficult? Have China’s leaders since 1949 used force to try to claim particular territories, and if so what areas have they prized? What has been the country’s role as a global and regional power? Has its foreign policy changed significantly since 1976? These are the questions considered in this chapter.
