ABSTRACT

Much of the literature on conservation planning suffers from not having linked the minutiae of practice with broader issues in terms of either wider social agendas or longer-term strategic objectives. In response, this study has specifically addressed these criticisms by investigating policy and practice at both the national and the local level. This chapter dissects the evidence from the national interview survey and the two local planning authority case studies and discusses the findings in relation to the thematic framework. The emerging outcomes challenge many of the existing assumptions made about conservation practice and the justificatory norms supporting it.
