ABSTRACT

Prominent among the rabbinic scholars of this period was Joseph Caro (1488-1575) who emigrated

from Spain to the Balkans. In the 1520s Caro commenced a vast study of Jewish law, the House of Joseph, based on a number of previous codes by such scholars as Maimonides, Isaac ben Jacob Alfasi of Lucena (1013-1103), Asher ben Yechiel (1250-1327) and Jacob ben Asher (1270-1340). Caro’s study was a detailed commentary to Jacob ben Asher’s code, the Sefer Ha-Turim.
