ABSTRACT

According to the tradition, it is the duty of parents to educate their children. Thus, Deuteronomy 6:7 declares of Biblical laws: ‘And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise.’ In addition, Scripture repeatedly refers to a father’s obligation to tell his children about the Exodus from Egypt: ‘You may tell in the hearing of your son and of your son’s son how I have made sport of the Egyptians and what signs I have done among them’ (Exod. 10:2); ‘And you shall tell your son on that day, “It is because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt” ’ (Exod. 13:8); ‘When your son asks you in the time to come, “What is the meaning of the statutes and the ordinances which the Lord our God has commanded

you?” then you shall say to your son, “We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt; and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand” ’ (Deut. 6:20-21). In addition to such parental obligations, it was the duty of the Levites to teach the people: ‘They shall teach Jacob thy ordinances, and Israel the law’ (Deut. 33:10).
