ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to discuss the development of European cultural tourism with particular reference to issues relating to integration and identity. The European Union concept of ‘celebrating unity in diversity’ will be central to the discussion, which will demonstrate the extent to which cultural tourism development can contribute to the celebration of Europe’s rich heritage while promoting its diverse contemporary culture. Issues of cultural identity have come to the fore in recent years, partly as a result of political and economic moves towards increasing European integration and unity. For example, the development of European Union, the Maastricht Treaty and the advent of the euro have all contributed to the fostering of better relations between European nations. However, there has also been a concomitant resurgence of nationalism, increased racial tensions and assertion of regional identity in many parts of Europe. A number of European cultural initiatives have been developed to help ease such tensions and to promote mutual understanding. This chapter will attempt to demonstrate the positive contribution cultural tourism can make to this process, focusing in particular on joint European initiatives and projects.
