ABSTRACT
In line with the continuing strength of the psychometric tradition within clinical and educational psychology in Britain, and more especially in the United States, the largest category of language assessment instruments is formal tests. While language charts are specifically concerned with the way in which a child uses language on a day-to-day basis, language tests are much more concerned with what a child can do or say under optimal conditions.
