ABSTRACT
At the beginning of Chapter 1 it was suggested that linguists and psycholinguists interested in children’s language have addressed two major questions. First, what are the changing patterns of language abilities which characterise development? And, second, what are the processes by which developmental change occurs? The next two chapters are concerned with this second question and present a brief overview of different explanations of how language development occurs.
