ABSTRACT

Even if he had wanted to, Antigonus could not turn back the clock and rule a small Macedonian kingdom that was self sufficient and somewhat isolated from the rest of the world. Indeed, even in those apparently simpler days, Macedonia was always subject to the interference of outside powers-Persia or Athens or other Greek adventurers-not to mention incursions of barbarians from the north. With most of the civilized world ruled by large empires founded by Macedonians and deeply imbued with Greek culture, Macedonia and Greece must either be on an equal footing with the other empires or absorbed by one of them.
