ABSTRACT

The browser is the Internet user’s single most important software tool. The software giants Netscape and Microsoft have recently fought an antitrust case in the USA over whether Microsoft’s conduct during the development and marketing of their browser Internet Explorer was good for innovation or anticompetitive. 1 The battle for the hearts and minds of Web users has been pursued in similar cut-throat fashion ever since Netscape first appeared in 1995. As a result the user’s choice of browser might represent a political statement, whatever was preloaded on their computer when purchased, or the choice of their IT support unit. Whichever is the case this chapter will help users get the most out of their browsers, from tips for those trying to acquire this essential piece of software for the first time to help with personalising it.
