ABSTRACT
But what kind of relationship exists between solving problems of a certain kind (e.g. mathematical problems) and problem solving as a general capability? Although problem solving seems to be crucial for academic, professional and everyday performance, defining what problem solving as a general competence or life skill means, and how it might be measured in large-scale assessments, especially in contrast to domain-specific competencies like mathematical or scientific literacy, is unclear. This chapter reviews the state of the art with regard to the concept and development of measures of problem solving.
