Atholl, Duchess of; Katherine Marjory Stewart-Murray (1874– 1960)
Conservative MP and first Conservative woman minister. The daughter of Sir James Ramsay, a well-known historian, Kitty Ramsay was brought up in an aristocratic Scottish family who had been Lairds of Banff since 1232. She was educated at Wimbledon High School and the Royal College of Music where she took her ARCM. In 1899 she married the future Duke of Atholl. They had no children. Her public service began before the First World War, when from 1909 she was President of the Perthshire Red Cross Society. In 1912 she sat on the committee investigating the medical services in the Highlands and Islands, and in 1917 she was a member of the Committee of Enquiry on Scottish Tinkers. During the war, she turned the family seat, Blair Castle, into an auxiliary hospital which she ran herself.
