Burdett-Coutts, Angela Georgina, Baroness (1814–1906)
Philanthropist. Born in London, she was the youngest child of the radical politician Sir Francis Burdett and his wife Sophia, a daughter of the wealthy banker Thomas Coutts. Her childhood was a privileged one of luxury and foreign travel, made all the more interesting because of her father’s extensive connections, which gave her a wide and enlightened social circle. She was educated by tutors, drawing masters, and language coaches. Her governess, Hannah Meredith, became a much-loved companion whose influence strengthened Angela Burdett’s Evangelical fervour.
