ABSTRACT

As soon as the part men played in oppressing women was established, the conception of women as generally oppressed was shown to be problematic. Feminism faced serious divisions. Taking the variety of women's situations and experiences into account is not a simple matter of adding on those which had been omitted. Understanding the full range of women's lives has entailed looking not only at women's oppression by men, but also at women's solidarity with men, and at women's oppression by women.
