ABSTRACT
Philosophers do not, in my opinion, stand in the highest repute at the moment, at least not in Britain. There is more than one reason for this, and it may be worthwhile to spell out some of them. In due course I shall go into the changing history which lies behind the present situation, from which it may be possible to draw certain morals, apart from its own intrinsic interest.
