ABSTRACT

Two collections of Wittgenstein papers, one described and one discovered in recent years, throw light on his methods of work and particularly on the genesis of the first version of the book he was planning in 1936-1939, which it will be convenient to refer to by the name ‘Philosophische Bemerkungen [1938]’. We do not have a full version of this projected small volume but it can be constructed with some approximation from the typescripts 220/239 and 221 (von Wright’s numeration,1 which will be followed throughout). It includes more than what Baker and Hacker2 call ‘Proto-Philosophical Investigations’ (PPI) as will be shown in due course.
