ABSTRACT

To me certain basic values are universally held by human beings regardless of religion, race or caste. These include hospitality, friendship and kindness. Such values connect people. ‘Invite others towards good, establish good deeds and prohibit what is bad’ (Surah 3, Al Imran, the family of Imran). Although embedded in the Muslim ideal they are not the exclusive property of the Muslims, as this chapter will illustrate. This will be made clear when we see how and where different groups belonging to different religions and races come together or collide with each other. In both actions lies the assumption of a larger relationship linking groups to a common humanity, transcending race and religion.
