ABSTRACT
It has now become something of a cliché to talk about ‘adolescence’ as a twentieth-century creation. Adolescence, as a time set aside for waiting, developing and maturing and for accomplishing the rites of passage between childhood and adult status, is certainly an extended phase of life for today’s young people.
