ABSTRACT
The first known visit of comici dell’arte to Russia was in 1733 when an Italian troupe (in between tours of Poland), played in front of the Empress Anna Joannavna. From the mid-eighteenth century, when French was adopted as the Court language, until 1787, and again in the nineteenth, the Russian nobility never allowed St Petersburg to become too distant from Paris, especially in matters artistic and theatrical.
