ABSTRACT

Charles Dullin first earned his living as an actor playing melodramas on the outskirts of Paris. The first troupe he started of his own was a Théâtre de Foire in 1908 in Neuilly, with Saturnin Fabre, based on texts by Alexandre Arnoux. ‘The unique goal of this artistic decentralisation? Making some cash. The booth? Had been lent to us by a flea circus proprietor who had fallen on hard times.’ 1
