ABSTRACT
In this chapter three Asian countries in which English plays an important role will be reviewed: India, Singapore and the Philippines. In none of these countries is English a native language; in all of them it is part of the colonial legacy. In other former colonial possessions in Asia in which English once had a similar status, such as Sri Lanka or Malaysia, its role has gradually been reduced to that of an important foreign language.
